Turn an interest into a question

Instead of “I need an engineering supervisor,” write a question or phenomenon you want to understand, three focused search terms and a possible way to investigate it. You do not need a final project. The purpose is to identify what you seek and what you still need to learn. Separate work you have actually done from methods you would like to learn.

Start with the program and department

Check the program for your intended degree and language, then use its official department website. As a contextual example, Tsinghua’s computer-science directory links to faculty members; a directory entry does not establish that someone is accepting new students. Sahla’s finder begins with department references and may contain no individual profiles. That is a limit of the available information, not a judgment about your prospects.

Read with a purpose

Choose an official profile and read its research description and selected relevant work. Record a title you examined, its central idea, what you actually understood and what needs further reading. Do not claim to have read a whole paper after reading its abstract. Look for connections in questions, methods or data. A shared keyword in a title is insufficient evidence of research fit.

Write a correctable alignment note

Reflection structure, not a ready-made claim: “My interest is [specific question]. I read [verified title and link]. I understood the work to address [your actual understanding]. I would like to explore [an honest connection or question].” Remove any field you cannot support. Also record why the program might be unsuitable. A useful comparison looks for limitations as well as reasons to choose it.

Separate three questions

Is the research relevant to your interests? Is the person authorized to supervise your degree within the program? Is there current capacity for another student? These are independent questions. A job title and institutional email do not answer the last one. Consult the program’s instructions about contact; supervisor outreach or a letter must not become a universal requirement.

Save a small set and revisit sources

Use the shortlist for a department reference and a non-sensitive research note. If a reference changes or its review expires, return to the official website before relying on it. Do not harvest contact addresses or send the same message to many people. When the connection is meaningful and contact is appropriate, use the outreach guide and email assistant to formulate one specific, personalized question.
